Cactus extract, a natural product derived from cactus, is a useful "recovery agent" for exercise, as a post-exercise intervention to increase plasma insulin can promote the recovery of muscle glycogen reserves. In addition, the polysaccharides, flavonoids and guava acids contained in cactus are effective in scavenging excess free radicals from the body, thus acting as an antioxidant.

Guava acid has a weak scavenging capacity for DPPH but a strong scavenging capacity for -OH, an important reactive oxygen species that kills red blood cells and degrades DNA, cell membranes and polysaccharide compounds, while guava acid has a significant scavenging effect on -OH, indicating that it may have strong antioxidant activity and anti-ageing activity.
